On January 2, 1998, a group of seven (7) Metro Manila-based
professionals from the island town of Zumarraga, Western Samar decided
to incorporate themselves into a non-stock, non-profit, non-partisan
foundation. These magnificent, kind-hearted seven (7) are: RAdm Eriberto
C. Varona, Dr. Teresa Diez-Solero, Mr. Ireneo S. Buñales, Engr.
Anastacio C. Gatil, Atty Charlie C. Lim, Mr. Reinerio C. Lonzaga and Mr.
Gerardo Z. Verzosa. Their desire: help alleviate the plight of young
and talented Zumarraganhons through wider opportunities for educational
advancement to ultimately uplift the quality of their lives. ZUCIR
Foundation, Inc., or ZUFI, was thus born.
On 13 March 1998, ZUFI was registered with the Securities and Exchange
Commission (SEC) under Registration No. A-1998-702 and, on 2 Dec 1999,
with the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) under TIN 204-291-354-000.
From the seed fund of P204,686.25, fund that was generated by RAdm
Eriberto C. Varona during his hermanidad of Zumarraga’s Town
Fiesta in Metro Manila in 1997, ZUFI’s assets have grown to more than P1
million. The Foundation started supporting twenty (20) local high
school scholars at the start of its operations during SY98-99. Since
then, it has awarded a total of 203 one-year scholarship grants, 176 in
high school and 27 in college. As its resources expanded, it inaugurated
its college scholarship program by supporting a college scholar during
SY2000-2001. For the current SY04-05, it is supporting eleven (11)
college scholars: nine (9) in Catbalogan and two (2) in Metro Manila.
